Because of the sluggish economic today, local businesses everywhere are slashing their budgets to make ends meet. A typical (but disturbing) business trend is that they think they can make it through these hard economic times by drastically reducing their advertising or worse yet, not advertise at all. Personally this mentality leaves me scratching my head and leaves me wondering what business school taught that way of thinking.

Savvy business owners don’t run & hide when the economy slows, they see opportunity. They do not think of decreasing their advertising, in fact many see the value in increasing advertising budgets. When the economy is good, people spend openly. When the economy takes a turn for the worse, people’s buying habits change. Experienced business owners search for the new trends in consumer spending. A sluggish economy means consumers will look for ways to save money, while maintaining the same level of product quality. Therefore, brand loyalty is not as relevant anymore. What’s most important is finding a brand that caters to consumer wants, while satisfying needs.

If anything, marketing is more important now than it ever was. People are willing to try different products. If they are satisfied with these new products, there won’t be a reason to switch back once the economy gets better. Aggressive advertising and marketing will put your products in front of the consumer when they are looking to find that great new product.

How can you find these consumers? Get them online! With every dollar being more important than before, consumers are researching almost every purchase they make. In fact recent survey’s have shown that over 70% of consumer search online for local businesses, products or services prior to making any purchase decisions. Serious thought is now put into everything from what toilet paper brand to buy to where to eat dinner to what model of car to drive.

Online advertising can be done most economically through search engine optimization. It does not involve a lot of money toward advertising, and the people it drives to your website are better qualified leads if keyword research is done properly. Now is the time for your business website to be thinking about Search Engine Optimization. Local businesses such as TucsonMerchant.com are here to help implement and handle your SEO for you. Good internet marketing firms will get to know your company and products, and work with you to determine the best strategy to implement and monitor your SEO campaign. Taking this route will free your time up to work on other things, and you’ll get regular reports and advice on the progress and direction of your site.

More customers, better results, less cost….just what any local business experiencing this sluggish economy needs.

Other ways to reduce costs in today’s economy:

Increasing your “marketable customer database” but implementing a “customer capture campaign” with proven permission based email marketing. “The money is in the list”, as your marketable database list grows, so does your business. Recent survey’s show local small business reporting an average return of $43.08 on every dollar spent on an effective email marketing campaign.

Fixing your broken or ineffective business website. Build new, or Re-Design, either way your business websites need to meet the demands of this Internet crazed society we live in today. Can new & existing customers easily find your business on the Internet? A well designed, easy to navigate, information packed business website turns visitors into paying customers.

Get your business and your advertising out in front of “targeted customers” by Geo-Targeting your advertising per zip code….yes, per zip code! No more wasted advertising dollars spent on un-targeted marketing. Link to your website, add photo’s, menu’s, logo’s & maps with directions to your front door. All for less Value-Pak Mailers” or any other local form of advertising. Up to 50% less in most cases.

Now, take your newly designed business website, stuffed full of information, marketing features & SEO techniques…..Add the power of an effective permission based email / newsletter campaign, capturing all those new visitors to your website, adding them to your marketable database….with an effective, efficient Geo-Targeted Advertising Campaign.

That makes for an extremely powerful marketing campaign, one that produces better results & saves you money!

Direct Mail Drop
MARCH 9, 2009

Lickety split.
Consumers may call it junk mail, but for over half a century marketers considered direct mail to be the “old reliable.”

Now, for the first time since direct mail began to be tracked in 1945, figures show that both direct mail spending and volume declined sharply in 2008.

According to “A Channel in Transformation: Vertical Market Trends in Direct Mail 2009,” from the Winterberry Group, US direct mail spending fell nearly 3% last year.

Spending dropped from $58.4 billion in 2007 to $56.7 billion in 2008.

Worse, Winterberry projects that direct mail spending will fall another 8% to 9% this year.

Mintel Comperemedia found that the volume of direct mail among the leading vertical industries fell an average of 12.1% in 2008.

“Direct mail volumes declined dramatically—even more precipitously than the falloff in spending, in fact—as mailers sought to integrate more precise targeting methodologies, production efficiencies and other value focused initiatives in an attempt to cut costs and preserve the economic return of their mail programs,” Winterberry analysts wrote in the report. “Direct mail has seen its influence as a high-volume, mass-oriented response driver all but vanish.”

The crisis in the financial services industry—a sector that mails on a mammoth scale—helped fuel the decline. Other reasons for the drop were rising costs in postage, labor and production.

Consumers’ ever-growing involvement in digital media was a factor, too.

In a Winterberry survey of service providers, 87% said they were seeing higher demand for digital products such as e-mail and search.

Nevertheless, direct mail still accounts for over $50 billion in US spending and, this dip aside, remains a viable industry. However, in the place of many old tried-and-true tactics, a wide variety of new mail applications are now beginning to emerge.

In the face of challenging conditions, mailers are shifting to lower-volume, more targeted and higher-value campaigns, and saturation mailings—call them “batch-blast,” “spray-and-pray” and “junk” mail—may soon be relics of the past.

TucsonMerchant.com has joined forces with LocalAdLink.com, an extremely effective, geo-targeted local advertising network. Local Tucson Business Owners now have the opportunity to “Laser Target” advertising efforts to customers in specific zip code locations, maximizing their advertising dollar.

“This is huge!! I am extremely excited to be a part of the LocalAdLink.com family,” states Ken Perry of TucsonMerchant.com. “This creates the low-cost, extremely effective, geo-targeted advertising that Local Business here in Tucson needs to keep ahead of current economic conditions. To have the opportunity to zero in on specific neighborhoods and zip codes only goes to show how far and how powerful the internet can be. For any local small business who is not taking advantage of the internet to grow your business, the time is now!”

Until now large companies have been the main ones benefiting from being able to advertise on the Internet. LocalAdLink changes all that! LocalAdLink.com uses a process called geo-targeting technology – a modern process which determines the physical location of a website visitor and delivers content to that visitor based on his or her location! Thus, the results of a ‘search’ gives priority to display paid classified ads for local businesses. This is a huge break through for local small business, leveling the playing field, enabling the small business owner to compete with those “big box stores”.

LocalAdLink.com combines the powers of social network marketing, internet e-commerce and customized geo-targeted local advertising to create a massive advertising network which includes highly traveled websites like MySpace, FaceBook, CNN, BoomJ.com, I-Supply.com and Photography.com. Well over 1000 websites, with more joining everyday, create this unique advertising network.

Combining LocalAdLink.com with the already effective small business marketing solutions TucsonMerchant.com offers, creates an amazing one-two punch that no other local marketing company offers.

Most times starting up and implementing an entire email marketing campaign can seem daunting. Where does one even start? Small business owners for the most part don’t have a clue. The learning curve is long and hard. If a small business owner sees the value
of a permission based email campaign, but either hasn’t the time or knowledge to implement this powerful tool into their business plans, they must turn to a professional, one who understands the powers of the internet and has the experience to integrate this proven marketing technique into your small business marketing plans.

TucsonMerchant.com has developed a simple 5-step process; a fail-proof permission-based email marketing plan that gives you an actual road map to email marketing success!

Step 1. Start using permission-based email software that allows you to easily create newsletters, automatically manage subscribes, unsubscribes, bounces, and view reporting statistics like opens and click-throughs. TucsonMerchant.com installs, sets-up and manages the entire process. This assures you of an effective, efficient customized email marketing plan.
Step 2. Decide on the type and frequency of email communication you will be sending to your opt-in customer list. At a minimum send at least a monthly newsletter. You can send multiple newsletters if you sell different types of products. You can also send targeted promotional messages offering a discount or a coupon for a product or service, offer other incentives or rewards to your preferred customers, send product service notices, warrantee updates, post purchase care instructions. By doing this, it builds solid customer relations.
Step 3. We add a sign-up form to your website so you can start collecting subscribers and import any existing lists of subscribers that have already requested your communications. It is generally also safe to import the names of anyone who has done business with you in the past year, provided you will be sending content relevant to what they purchased. As your list grows, you will notice increased traffic (and if applicable, increased sales) on the day of and the days following an email send.
Step 4. TucsonMerchant.com works with individual business owners to select and customize the best email template, or series of templates, reflective of your business theme. We create enticing, eye appealing designs that get results!
Step 5. Together we develop quality, relevant content for your newsletter or message and send it out to your list. Continued sending of your newsletters, announcements, or promotions with consistent frequency creates customer loyalty and confidence in your products or service, effectively "branding" your business. Don’t forget, these are customer and potential customers who want to hear from you. They are seeking information that only you can offer. An effective permission based email campaign transforms potential customers into paying, returning customers.

TucsonMerchant.com manages your permission based email campaigns every step of the way, relieving you of time that can be better spent on other aspects of your business.

Contact us today to see how we can improve your business. TucsonMerchant.com offers a variety of proven, cost effective ways to promote and grow your business, especially in sluggish economic times as we are experiencing.

I have performed a lot of research into local Tucson, Arizona restaurants and I keep seeing the same trend over and over. I also have found that this “trend” is not isloalted only to Tucson, but is nationwide, worlwide even. This “trend” is the ineffectiveness of their marketing techniques, especially when it comes to internet marketing. Most local restaurants stick with tried and true marketing such as print ads in small local papers, monthly direct mailers (Value Pack for example) or the occational 30 second radio ad. In my opinion, anything “print” is becoming extinct. Readership is down drastically, cost of ads keep rising and the effectiveness of print ads run only approximately .5-1% on a 10,000 mailing. Not much of a ROI (return on investment). Local radio ads generally receive a more targeted response but are too costly for most small local restaurants and tend to run infrequently or during “off hours” where they are basically rendered in-effective. To battle this dilema, one must turn to advertising methods rarely used by small / medium sized local restaurants. To many restaurant owners, the internet is unexplored territory and feared, only by a lack of knowledge.

Statisics show that 82% of home have internet and that more every day are turning to the interent to search locally instead of using the yellow pages. It makes total sense to explore the powers of the internet and integrate these powers into your marketing plans. There is a whole new world out there, one which “newer generations” were weened on. They expect your business to be online. if it’s not, chances are they will pass you right by.

Now….having a website is one thing, but having a website that actually works for YOU is another. Honestly, way too many local restaurant owners who had the forthsight to put their business online, paid a bunch of money for basically a “digital business card”. If you do have a website, ask yourself….are you happy with it’s performance? Does your website generate income? Does it have the abilities to “capture” existing and NEW customers…growing your client base? It makes me mad to see that so many hard working, well intended local restaurant owners got “hosed” by some fast talking, self serving web designer. Here is a little secret….while there are web designers who do create beautiful websites, most web designers are the “techy” type, who know little, if any about how to effectively market your business. I liken it to buying a 2009 Jaguar…..but not having the gas to put in it. Meaning, you can have the most gorgeous website out there….but if it’s not set up with the proper search engine techniques, or proper internet marketing weapons…..no one will ever find it. Marketing on the internet is an artform within itself.

There are ways an experience internet marketer can suggest to change all this. There are tools we use that can turn your “postcard” website into a customer generating, cash magnet. there are methods we use (we = experienced intenet marketers) that grow your customer base, keep existing customers returning, creating greatly improved customer relations and loyalty….which in turn….fills those empty tables!

Do you want the ability to send out notices of your daily / weekly specials to a “targeted” customer base?

Do you want the ability to “reward loyal customers”?

Do you want the ability to target local businesses to gain their lunch / dinner / happy hour traffic?

You can have this easily by harnessing the powers of the internet and integrating internet marketing into your business. It makes total sense to me and it truly is alarming that more local small businesses, not only restaurants, do not use these marketing techniques, especially in the “internet crazed society” we have today.

And the best part of all this is that it costs a fraction of conventional marketing methods. Open your eyes Tucson to a new, improved, unexplored, profitable way to market your business. The internet is the future. get your business on board before it passes you by.

Next….we will explore more ways to effectively market your restaurant business by using “Mobile Marketing Techniques”.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners know their business, but know little about actual marketing, let alone internet marketing and how to benefit from it.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners do not know the benefits of “the list” and how important it plays in marketing their business.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners only stay away from internet marketing technologies because most do not understand how to implement them.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners tend to stick with standard advertising methods instead of thinking “out of the box” for better solutions.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners are already over burdened with business matters to take on “something new”, even if it saves them money.

Fact! Most Small Business Owners look for the most cost efficient and effective advertising, but are afraid to stray from “old, outdate methods.”

Fact! Most Small Business Owners, especially here in Tucson do not utilize internet marketing technologies!! It’s Time Step ahead of the Pack! Advance your business instead
of just “settling” for what you have now.

We show you the benefits of integrating internet marketing technologies with your advertising methods you now use and how it actually can reduce your advertising budget.

We educate you on the importance of “the list” and the growth potential it presents.

We show you step by step methods, so you can understand not only how, but why this works.

We teach you ways to increase business by proven, “out of the box” technologies that extremely few in Tucson are using.

We show you that by implementing these methods, you actually put a large part of your business on “autopilot”, lessening your time dependency on your business.

Most Small Business Owners, myself included are from a generation where the Internet was introduce to us in the mid 80’s, mid way though our lives. It was new….it was intimidating…..it was even scary at times. But over time, we grew to except it and some of us, like myself, jumped in head first, learning all we can about it. But for the rest of you, it was, and still is pretty much unexplored territory and the full benefits of the internet are hidden, only by not understanding how to fully utilize them. Most of you have an email address or two, maybe visit youtube.com, but that’s pretty much the extent of your internet experience.

Now,think for a minute beyond our generation, to the younger generation who were weaned from a very young age on the internet. It has become such a powerful force to them. They simply do not know life…without internet! This same younger generation is the future of your business. They “expect” you to be on the internet. I know of very few under the age of 30 who pick up the phone book to look for information. They instead turn to the internet for their searching, especially local searches for shopping, entertainment, restaurants, education, employment, health, even romance….

Basically everything you can think of is found on the internet!

If your business is to grow, it must keep up with the times and trends of today’s internet crazed world. You as the owner must position yourself with knowledge, and have the forth site to implement this knowledge with methods that integrates your business with the demands of the “internet generation. Are you in position to make this happen? Is your business?

Just having a website doesn’t mean your ready. OK, it’s the first step, but be honest….I bet you dished out a huge chunk of change to have some web designer create a very nice looking site for you, but you find that the web site is basically ineffective. Does your web site drive in new customers on a steady basis?

Is your web site easily found when people search for your products or services? Does your web site offer ways for customers to “opt-in” to receive newsletters or special offers? Does your web site make money?

Here is a very simple misunderstanding that most small business owners have when it comes to web sites and potential customers. Let me guess….your web site has all the basics….company logo, address, phone numbers and a “contact us” page….correct? Just having a “contact us” page does not offer you the means to capture these visitors and turn them into paying customers. People “contact you” for simple things like, “Are you open on Sundays”, or “what’s the nearest intersection”, or they need information to return an item…. They are not asking to be placed on any mailing list with this “contact us page. If you attempt to email these customers from information they supplied on a basic “contact us” page, you are essentially spamming them with “unsolicited” emails and offers. You have no means to “capture” these visitors or existing customers and use them to grow your customer database. By implementing our “Customer Capture Campaign”, you have the means, and your list grows and grows. It really doesn’t matter what type of business you have, online or “brick and mortar”, it’s all the same….”The Money is in The List”!!!

Your list is a vital extension of your business. It’s the base on which your business grows.

Now is the time to think about this. Not tomorrow….NOW. I’m serious…why would you wait? So your competition can get on this band wagon and pass you by?

Contact me to make a no cost, 100% risk free appointment. 20 minutes is all we need to gather the information we need to offer you proven solutions to better your business, grow your business and save money at the same time.

“If I told you that with just a few simple tweaks to something you most likely already have, you could keep your existing customers coming back, drive new customers to your business, and…at the same time, lower your monthly advertising costs by as much as 50%….would you clear 20 minutes from your busy day to find out how?”

This is one of many things we should talk about, and just one of the many ways we could suggest to increase your business, even in today’s sluggish economy. Did you know that the vast majority of Tucson’s businesses do not utilize these simple, easy to maintain practices? You would be amazed, if you began using these techniques, then see the businesses around you, and think….why isn’t everyone doing this…it’s so simple and rewarding!!

I am Ken Perry, and I have been working with local small business owners who are interested in finding more effective, efficient and cost saving ways to grow their business. My findings have unvailed some alarming trends among local Tucson businesses. It shouldn’t be “business as usual” anymore. We have just begun a campaign that educates local business owners of these trends and how they can take steps to defend themselves against them. It really would benefit you to know this.

Please allow me to ask you a few questions:

Do you feel you are making the most out of your customer base?

Are you satisfied with your advertising campaign, or do you feel it needs “more bang for your buck”?

Are you finding yourself working longer hours, spending more of your profits to find creative ways to keep your sales from falling into the drains of a sluggish economy?

If I was able to show you ways of actually increasing your sales, increasing your customer base, decreasing your advertising budgets and decreasing your “time dependency” on your business…would you talk to me?Makes you think, doesn’t it….makes you wonder if there are actual ways to implement all this and how it will improve my business. 20 minutes of your time is all it takes to find out.

I’ll even spring for the coffee!

Call at your earliest convenience to schedule your appointment. The number is 520-797-0572. Lets sit down & discuss your business needs and goals, and I’ll customize methods that will show you ways to meet, or better yet, exceed them, staying ahead of these current trends.

In many cases the best marketing approach is one that utilizes both online and offline techniques. Direct mailings are a great way to catch people´s attention, but may be too expensive for many small businesses. That´s where email marketing benefits many small local buinesses.

Email marketing is a very cost effective method of communicating with your clients. You don´t even have to have a website to do this, though it definitely helps. Your customers can sign up by giving you their emails right in your store. A guestbook or “fishbowls” to collect business cards can be very useful methods of collecting email addresses, just make sure you have a column for it.

With email marketing, you can send out updates and information on your latest events, sales and promotions, product updates. It´s a great way to keep your business fresh in people´s minds and ensure that they don´t forget you. Hopefully, the next time they need your product or service, you will pop into their minds!

Even if you currently have a direct mail campaign, that doesn´t mean email shouldn´t be used. You can also do split testing this way, see which method works best for your target market. Email marketing could be a great way to boost your offline business contacts. In today’s “internet crazed” society, more and more people are using their computers to search instead of the phone book. Restaurants, retail shops, Doctors, Dentists, health spa’s, hair dressers, auto repair shops, etc. There are thousands of people using local searches daily to find you. Imagine “capturing” all those visitors email addresses, giving you the ability to add them to your list and send your targeted advertisments directly to them. As your customer list grows, so does your business!
